Credit Card Terminals Are Essential For Business

It would be unthinkable for any business nowadays to not be able to take credit cards or to carry out credit card transactions in some way. However, although most businesses now do this as a matter of course it is still important to find the correct credit card POS terminal in order that the transaction goes through smoothly and that the data is transmitted securely. You also need to ensure that the credit card terminal can be integrated with other point-of-sale hardware and that the whole system, including the software, works as a seamless single system.

Essentially, the credit card to is the way that the data on the credit card is read. There are different types of terminals, though the two most in use are what are known as the traditional terminal and the wireless credit card terminal.

Touchscreen keypads

The traditional terminal is a very basic service, in that it reads the data on the credit card and usually makes use of a keypad and a traditional display screen. Sometimes this is a touchscreen but often it is just the traditional keypad. The transaction data is entered on the keyboard or the touchscreen and, unless a barcode reader is being used, a code will be entered so that the price of the merchandise can be entered onto the bill. The display is often backlit, which means the terminal can be used in most retail environments, and the usual way that the data is transmitted is over PSTN lines.

The wireless credit card terminal, a fairly new invention on the scene, uses wireless to carry out credit card processing in the same way as the traditional terminal. However, because this does not need to be linked to a phone line or any other kind of communication network in any physical way, it can be moved around the store, something which makes it ideal for places such as restaurants, where it is easy for some of the waiting staff to go to the customers instead of the customers having to go to a cash register or desk.

Credit card terminals

The mobile credit card terminal will have a battery, and this will need to be fully charged in order for the unit to operate properly. This means it needs to be recharged regularly in order to make sure it does not malfunction. As with the traditional terminal, the wireless terminal will sometimes have a printer so that bills and receipts can be printed wherever needed.

Take a look at the MobileScape 5000 wireless credit card processing terminal. This unit, which costs about $800, is also a check processing terminal, and gives instant online account access to reduce chargebacks. There is also the Verifone M4230 wireless credit card terminal, which is PCI PED approved, Mastercard PTSP approved, and gives fast processing, along with security through the PCI PED approved PIN pad.

Credit card processing

The thing that needs to be borne in mind with most types of credit card processing terminal is that it needs to be able to work with your current POS network, and you will also need to make sure that the software enables you to integrate credit card processing with billing, and even better, the accountancy function so that the accounts can be updated in real time.

When choosing any kind of terminal it can be an idea in to discuss your needs with a POS expert, since this will give you an insight into what other type of hardware you need to make the system work seamlessly. It may be that you need a more modern type of POS cash register, maybe going for a cash register with an LCD touchscreen that should be able to work with the most modern credit card terminals available.

Finding the right credit card terminal can be a really difficult thing, and so it's really good to find as much information as possible. However I would probably look at employing a consultant to take a look at the system as a whole to make sure you make the right choice.
